Secrets of the Ancients - How they built things

Whenever people today see wonders of the ancient world, like Stonehenge or the Pyramids, the question that always comes up is “how’d they do that? These are the questions that this documentary series tries to answer, and one thing is clear: it wasn’t easy!

1. Viking Voyage - How difficult would it be sailing across the North Sea in a massive wooden boat with only a primitive sun-compass for navigation? The Vikings managed it, so in Secrets of the Ancients, an international crew decided to give it a go in a replica Viking long boat. Kind of makes our everyday reliance on the A to Z rather pathetic.

2. Caesar's Bridge - Julius Caesar claimed that during the Gallic wars, he had built a sturdy wooden bridge across the Rhine, over which he marched an entire army, in just ten days. A couple of thousand years later, this series looks on as engineer Chris Wise uses Caesar’s own recorded account in an attempt to recreate this engineering feat over the North Tyne.

3. The Claw - The mathematician Archimedes invented a terrifying machine known as The Claw, which was used successfully against the Romans when they attempted to conquer Syracuse. Despite the slight inconvenience that there is no record of the machine’s appearance or its mechanism, engineer Jo da Silva attempts to recreate it for Secrets.

4. Olmec Heads - The Olmec civilization in Mexico sculpted massive stone heads 3000 years ago - 500 years before Rome was founded. These statues weighed up to 40 tonnes and were made from stone that came from the Tuxtla mountains more than 160 kilometres away. The journey would have taken the Olmecs across great rivers and virtually impassable swamps. How did they manage that?

5. Hanging Gardens of Babylon - A lot of people have heard of The Hanging Gardens of Babylon, but few know why these gardens were considered by the Greeks to be one of the Seven Wonders of the World. The irrigation system alone is a mystery worthy of its own Secrets episode. How were such elaborate gardens watered? No one really knows, but attempts to test various theories have been made by modern water engineers using technology of the time and this series follows those attempts. At least these Babylonians didn’t have to face the modern-day difficulty of a hose-pipe ban.

Roman Invasion of Britain (2009)

For several centuries, immediately after the time of Christ, the people of Britain found themselves if not the slaves then certainly the servants of one of the mightiest empires the world has ever seen - the empire of Rome. In this three-part series every phase in the long history of Roman Britain will be looked at. We will chart the way in which the Roman conquerors interacted with the native inhabitants of the land they called ‘Britannia’ and find out who gained most from the Roman occupation - us or them?


Part 1: Onslaught

The Romans came to Britain and conquered it, ruling the island for centuries. But why did they come and how did they succeed in the face of the inhabitants’ ferocious resistance? Using state-of-the-art graphic imagery and expert reconstructions of the Roman army in action, Bettany Hughes goes back in time to see how they inspired shock and awe.
Hughes analyses the motives and actions of Roman emperors and generals, and of their opponents like Caratacus, a warrior from South-East England who became a hero to the Britons.

Part 2: Revolt

With British Queen Boudicca in the South East and the Druids in the North West, doubts arose about the Roman’s ability to rule Britain. Bettany Hughes visits places like the city of Bath and the village of Caerwent in Monmouthshire where evidence remains of how Britons were eventually ‘Romanised’ into a love of the civilised Roman way of life.


Part 3: Dominion

We investigate the lives of the people of Britain under Roman rule in the final episode of our gripping series "The Roman Invasion of Britain". After Roman control had been established, thanks to military bases such as the magnificent fort at Caerleon, the province of Britannia was relatively calm for a couple of centuries under 'Pax Romana', the Roman peace. However, whereas those at the top end of society prospered, the lives of those at the bottom of the pile could be tough and brutal. Bettany Hughes sees for herself the evidence of slave labour in the gold-mines of Dolaucothi. Bettany also traces how the Roman grip on Britain weakened as the empire's strength began to collapse.

Seconds From Disaster: The Bomb in Oklahoma City (2007) PDTV

On a bright spring morning in Oklahoma City employees arrive at work in the Alfred P Murrah Federal building. Dolores Watson drops her grandson at the second floor day care centre. Florence Rogers begins a meeting. Daina Bradley watches as at 9.01 Timothy McVeigh parks a Ryder truck outside the back, street entrance of the building. One minute later the truck explodes. The blast creates a crater 8 feet deep and destroys the front columns of the building and its glass facade.

Hurricane Katrina: Caught on Camera (2010)

Over three days in August 2005, a cataclysmic storm brought flooding and disaster to the Gulf Coast of America, leaving over 1,800 people dead in Louisiana and Mississippi.
